All Harry Potter fans know about Butterbeer, but few have tasted it. If you’ve been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, you’ve been lucky enough to have some! And it is SO GOOD! Right?! Right. Since the new part of the park has opened, a Butterbeer has been very popular to get. Everyone has to experience one. I’m so glad I did!
This drink is downright magical, and also pretty sweet. Butterbeer has also become something that many people want to make at home. So did I! I decided to make it for Halloween this year. I searched & found several recipes that I didn’t use for a few reasons: 1) They were too complicated (I’m no chef, ok!), 2) They made it a slushee or freeze (which is an option at the park, but I wanted the regular drink), & 3) Some recipes were just crazy confusing!
SO, I decided to use my research & make something that was what I thought was close to the Butterbeer that I had. I also wanted it simplified so that it wouldn’t be too hard to make… and like I said, I’m not a chef, I just want something yummy!! Lol Since I dressed up as Hermione for Halloween this year, I’m calling it Hermione’s Butterbeer. And let’s face it, if she ever made Butterbeer, she would do it quick!
*Acccio- Butterbeer! *
Ingredients for a single serving (don’t worry, I’ll provide measurements for bigger amounts as well):
– 8 ounces of Creme Soda (A&W’s is best)
– 1 tablespoon of Hot water
– 2 tablespoons of Butterscotch Syrup topping (Smuckers)
-Whipped cream (optional)
Before you make it- notes:: I was able to find Butterscotch syrup at Food 4 Less. Many recipes created something similar to it using brown sugar & a few other ingredients. This just makes it easier by like…. 5 steps! Also, many people actually used Butter. I didn’t really taste it in the drink I had, so I vetoed that idea! I went off of my tastebuds and it was a hit. So let’s get started….
~How to do it~
1st: Pour your tablespoons of butterscotch syrup into a cup or measuring cup–it’s easier with a measuring cup. Make sure it is clear & big enough for 8 ounces!
2nd: Take hot water and drizzle barley 1 tablespoon into butterscotch syrup. This dilutes the bold butterscotch flavor just a tiny bit. Use your judgement on how much exactly for you. Too much will loose almost all of its taste. Stir or whisk until the mixture is more liquid-like instead of thick syrup.
3rd: Pour cream soda slowly into butterscotch cup. Stir or whisk until it is well mixed!
*Hint: check bottom of cup to see if butterscotch is sitting at the bottom. You’ll notice the color change. If there is, stir some more & scrape the bottom gently. If there isn’t, it’s ready!
4th: Pour in a cool looking cup; a shorter cup is better because you can get some of the foam in every drink.
5th: If you want, add a dollop of whipped cream to the top of the drink. It makes the drink a little creamy at the top instead of just being all foam.
Drink up & enjoy!!
Another option, which seemed to be popular in other recipes, is to add Vanilla Ice cream. However, when I used it, my drink just turned into a type of float. This is caused by the mixture of ice cream and the soda. If you want that, great! But you definitely taste more vanilla than butterscotch, so I wouldn’t dilute it if that’s what you want.
Another Adult Option of course is to add alcohol. Vodka is probably best, but don’t do a crazy flavor unless it’s whipped cream… that worked for us! It was delicious. The only other thing I can picture spiking it with would be Rum. But that is entirely up to you.
Make some more! Here is a 32 ounce recipe (could serve about 4 people). The steps are the same but here are the ingredient measurements.
-32 ounces of Cream Soda
– 2 tablespoons of Hot water
– 1/2 a cup of Butterscotch syrup
* Engorgio*
Party size me! Haha this is how much I made on Halloween… and I think I needed more maybe! I did this recipe twice so that I had double. I used two whole cram Soda bottles, the big ones! I put x2 next to each ingredient so you know to double it or do it twice.
– 64 ounces/ 2 liters of Cream Soda (big bottle) x2
– 1/4 cup of Hot water x2
– 1 cup of Butterscotch syrup x2
*Note: most measuring cups only go to 32 ounces. So, mix the butterscotch & Soda in segments that you want (doesn’t have to be exact) and pour it all into another vessel like an empty gallon water bottle. It’ll all come together. Pouring segments in also helps mix it. The foam will take up a lot of space! It’s ok. But DO NOT shake it to mix…. it will explode out the top! And that would be a gastly mess to clean up, without magic.
Keep this drink in a fridge until it’s ready to drink OR go to a party. 😉 It tastes better cold, just like at the park.
There you have it! One of the fastest & easiest ways to make Butterbeer at home! It will be a hit at parties for years to come. I know my family loved it. It’s something kids can enjoy too, plus they feel extra cool since it has the word beer in it. Lol
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. And to my friends, let’s have a party & I’ll make some more, cuz you ALL missed out tonight! Haha
Thanks for reading & please share with more Harry Potter fans around the world!
